Canada has its fair share of very talented and original extreme metal bands. Augury, Cryptopsy, Martyr and Beneath The Massacre are great examples of that. Neuraxis are another worthy candidate for that list, mainly based on their more than excellent Trilateral Progression (2005) and The Thin Line Between (2008) albums. As with many bands these Canadians have had their share of line-up changes, so let’s take a look at what the new line-up brings to the table with Asylon, the band’s latest album.
As previously on Trilateral Progression And The Thin Line Between, Neuraxis teach us a brilliant lesson on Asylon on how to combine technicality, melody and well written songs. It may lack the progressive edge and the numerous guest spots Trilateral Progression had, but it’s still a major kick in the proverbial nuts.

Take Reptile, By The Flesh, Sinister or Trauma. All these tracks are brilliant examples of how to fuse melody, massive grooves and virtuoso capabilities in incredibly well structured songs, without losing power or sounding cheesy. Purity and V are great examples. What I especially like is the dirty edge. It gives this album an identity and a sense of originality of its own.

Producer Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy) is responsible for the heavy and dirty production of Asylon. It makes this record a bit harder to swallow than its two predecessors, but for some reason this kind of sound fits the record incredibly well.

I’m still flabbergasted by the fact that these Canadians are relatively unknown. Their musical skills are second to none and they have way more to offer in terms of originality than most Suffocation and Cannibal Corpse clones that populate the death metal scene nowadays. Asylon is clear proof of that. Highly recommended if you’re into bands like Obscura and The Faceless. Impressive!
